A controversial New York Times opinion piece reportedly has Taylor Swift and her team upset.
The New York Times piece that speculated on the sexual orientation of the record-breaking, multiple award-winning pop icon Taylor Swift has reportedly infuriated her team.
In the New York Times (NYT) op-ed, the writer claimed there are various “easy-to-decode clues” within Swift’s discography and personal life that hint that the singer is secretly queer.
These include different references and hidden secrets throughout her catalog, like Taylor’s rainbow-themed Lover album launch. The writer also noted that she’s “dropped hairpins before Lover and has continued to do so since.”
“This article wouldn’t have been allowed to be written about Shawn Mendes or any male artist whose sexuality has been questioned by fans.”
In the 5,000-word piece, editor Anna Marks put together a long list of LGBTQ references Swift has put in her songs and performances. It suggested Swift had, perhaps, for years been trying to signal that she identifies with the queer community.

“In isolation, a single dropped hairpin is perhaps meaningless or accidental, but considered together, they’re the unfurling of a ballerina bun after a long performance,” Marks wrote. “Those dropped hairpins began to appear in Ms. Swift’s artistry long before queer identity was undeniably marketable to mainstream America. They suggest to queer people that she is one of us.”
The girlfriend of Travis Kelce has long had the backing of the LGBTQ community as she has taken stands in support of her fans amid a record number of anti-gay bills introduced around the country.
Back in 2019, Swift said she has simply aimed to be a good ally to the LGBTQ community as their rights come under attack.
In the meantime, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were together over Christmas and the New Year in Kansas City, as Kelce’s team the Kansas City Chiefs had games on both Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. The two of them have not been shy about their relationship and have shown public displays of affection toward each other.
On Sunday, Swift attended the Golden Globes, while the Chiefs had a game against the Chargers in Inglewood.
