Cameron Brink opens up about rookie pressures including Caitlin Clark

In an interview with “Dime,” WNBA’s number 2 draft pick Cameron Brink shared insights into her early experiences in the league with the Los Angeles Sparks. Brink, the Pac-12 Women’s Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year out of Stanford, has had a tough start with a 2-6 record, placing the team at the bottom of the Western Conference.

Brink addressed several questions in the interview, with one of the most striking being about the tired narrative around women’s sports. She noted, “The most tired narrative is that the vets are against the rookies,” explaining that rookies are expected to be perfect. She mentioned Caitlin Clark as an example, highlighting the pressure even top picks face.

Brink emphasized that rookies, especially high draft picks, should be allowed to develop without unrealistic expectations. To me it’s good that high draft picks are treated this way, with pressure, because the coach knows the ability and capacity that the player can develop and it’s better to explode it at the start of their careers.

When asked about the most exhausting adjustment from college to the WNBA, Brink pointed to “the mental fatigue”. Despite the advantages like charter flights, adjusting to the demands of travel, sleep, and performance remains challenging. Of course, teams should acknowledge the importance of mental health support and camaraderie among teammates in coping with the demands of the league.

Reflecting on her “Welcome to the WNBA” moment, Brink recalled guarding Tina Charles as a significant challenge. “She’s just so dominant, and honestly, her jump hook middle is unguardable”. Charles’ dominance and unguardable moves, highlighted the steep learning curve rookies face when defending seasoned veterans. Brink should see these challenges as opportunities for growth and learning from the best in the WNBA.he WNBA.

Tonight, Cameron Brink and the LA Sparks (2-6) face the Minnesota Lynx (6-2) at 9:00 pm ET in the first of three home games for Los Angeles. Brink is averaging 8.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and ranks third in the league in blocks with 2.6 per game, showcasing her defensive prowess and why she was the Defensive Player of the Year in college.

The treatment is also having an effect on her mind, as she’s revealed suffering memory loss in her latest YouTube update.

“I’m given this drug to protect my hearing, and just because I have a reaction to it, they give me Ativan. And for some reason, this happened last time too, I can’t remember a single thing about that day,” she shared.

Isabella’s video includes footage from her hospital visit, during which she was eating a sandwich that she couldn’t recall ordering.
