A career first for the Sky star
The Chicago Sky have been among the WNBA‘s surprise packages early in the 2024 season. Energized by new coach Teresa Weatherspoon and the arrival of Angel Reese through the draft, Chicago‘s rebuild is arguably ahead of schedule already — despite the Sky‘s 2-3 record through five games.
Despite the losing record, Reese‘s performances thus far have given Sky and WNBA fans something to get excited about. In her latest game, the “Chi Barbie” achieved something that other prized rookies — such as Caitlin Clark and Cameron Brink — have yet to achieve themselves.
Reese posts a double-double…in a losing effort
The Sky fell in a close game on Tuesday night, as the Seattle Storm pulled away in the second half for a 77-68 victory at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. Reese did everything she could to prevent the defeat, as she posted her first career double-double — something she did almost nightly while playing for Kim Mulkey and the LSU Tigers.
Reese scored 11 points and hauled in 12 rebounds (six offensive) against star-studded Seattle, proving a constant thorn in the Storm‘s side. She added three assists and two steals in 29 minutes while converting all three of her free-throw attempts.
In recording a double-double, Reese became only the second player in Sky franchise history to achieve the statistical feat within the first five games of her career. The only other player to do so is Sylvia Fowles, and she is good company for Reese to have — Fowles is the WNBA’s all-time rebounding leader and a two-time WNBA champion. She also won four gold medals with the United States national team at four separate Summer Olympic Games.
Of course, it remains to be seen whether Reese has the same career trajectory as Fowles. But the new star in the Sky is certainly off to a good start.
