AAngel Reese continues to dazzle on WNBA basketball courts and inspire young athletes striving for NCAA excellence, her every move comes under scrutiny.

One aspect of her on-court appearance that has intrigued fans is her distinctive style of wearing a single leg sleeve. While many basketball players wear sleeves on both legs or none at all, Reese‘s choice has a deeper significance.

Reese‘s admiration for fellow basketball stars Te’a Cooper and A’ja Wilson, who also sport the single-leg sleeve look, plays a part in her fashion statement.

“Two players that I really admire, Te’a Cooper and A’ja Wilson, they wear it, too. So it’s swag,” Reese explained. Cooper plays for the Los Angeles Sparks in the WNBA, and Wilson is a standout for the Las Vegas Aces.

However, the primary reason for Reese‘s single leg sleeve is more personal. “I’ve used it to cover my scar,” revealed the 21-year-old in an interview with Nola.com.

Reese had surgery two years ago on her shin, which involved inserting a rod in her leg. “Many people don’t know that,” she admitted.

The origin of the scar traces back to her freshman year at Maryland. During the fourth game of the 2020-21 season, Reese made a coast-to-coast layup but landed awkwardly, resulting in pain in her pinky toe.

X-rays revealed a Jones fracture, necessitating surgery and a 12-week recovery period. Reese returned to play in February but later underwent another surgery to repair a split shinbone in her left leg, which required the insertion of the rod.

Covering the scar with her jersey-coordinated leg sleeve helps Reese maintain her confidence on the court. The series of injuries and subsequent surgeries took a toll on her mental health, as she discussed on the “I Am Athlete” podcast.

“My confidence completely dropped. I was like, do I wanna play basketball anymore?” she shared with former New York Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall and Ashley Nicole Moss.

Reese made a hard choice

Before deciding on the surgery, Reese faced a tough decision. She had just made the USA basketball team, and undergoing surgery meant missing out on that opportunity.

Ultimately, she chose to focus on her long-term health and career, preparing herself for her sophomore year. Though she wasn’t a starter initially, her performance soared once she took on that role, and she hasn’t looked back since.

From questioning her abilities to becoming an NCAA champion, Angel Reese embodies resilience. After overcoming her struggles, she averaged 17.8 points and 10.6 rebounds per game as a sophomore

Reflecting on her growth, she felt ready for a new challenge and made the “scariest decision” of her life by transferring to LSU.

This move proved to be transformative, as Reese thrived with the LSU Tigers, averaging 23 points and 15.4 rebounds per game in her junior year. Her stellar performance helped secure the first women’s NCAA basketball championship for Louisiana.
