It appears Netflix is taking quite some interest in the National Football League lately. There is reported to be a potential media rights deal in making between the NFL and Netflix, which might also be the reason behind the delayed release of the 2024 regular season schedule.

Earlier this week, on the WFAN radio show, host Boomer Esiason floated the possible angle of the biggest streaming media company, Netflix making its way to live-streaming business with the NFL. He predicted that Netflix might be negotiating to buy the media rights of NFL’s games on Christmas Day, after the massive success of Tom Brady’s roast.

[It] looks like Netflix will wind up carrying the two NFL games scheduled for December 25, per a bevy of sources.

John Ourand of Puck confirmed the news

However, he added that until the official statement comes out, the deal cannot be confirmed, as it could “all fall apart.” Both the parties involved haven’t signed any deal yet, they are focusing on making sure the deal comes into action without any hurdles.

Moreover, Ourand also emphasized that this media rights deal in-making could be a possible reason for the delay of the scheduled release, which has now been postponed to May 15. The previous speculations regarding this deal suggest Netflix demanding at least between $50 to 100 million for each Christmas Game it will live-stream.

Why is Netflix pursuing to live stream NFL games on Christmas game?

After dominating the film industry, Netflix is now building its name in the sports industry for sports-related content. Its special interest has always been in the NFL, as it produced docuseries such as Quarterback and is currently in the making of its sequel with Receivers.

It most recently aired the hilarious roast of NFL legend Brady on Sunday, and going to host the WWE Raw next year. They are finding new ways to establish their presence in sports and what’s better than to live streaming football games on the special day of Christmas, with its one of the largest fanbases.

Given, that the NFL intends to overpower the NBA in dominating the Christmas Day sports matches. Just last Christmas, the NFL’s games had a whopping audience of almost 30 million, while the NBA only had 5 million.
