Ex-Super Bowl champion Keyshawn Johnson breaks silence on Anthony Edwards being compared to Michael Jordan despite being just 22

With the way Anthony Edwards is playing, basketball fans are seeing some similarities between the Minnesota Timberwolves superstar and a certain NBA great. His performances in the playoffs led analyst Keyshawn Johnson to compare the similarities between Edwards and Michael Jordan.

While speaking on Undisputed, Johnson proceeded to explain why Anthony Edwards is comparable to Michael Jordan. He made quite a few points.

What happens to many people is, they compare the finished product of 6 championships, 6 MVPs. You can’t do that. That young man that we just watched has a lot of similarities to Michael in his game. Whether it’s the turnaround, which looked like Michael to me. Whether it’s I’m falling to the ground, I got fouled, but I’m gonna double clutch it, and I’m gonna still be in the air and knock the shot down. That’s Michael. That’s where the comparisons come in. Don’t think about the finished product.

He added that at the moment, there is a lot of Michael Jordan in Edwards’ game. The mentality shows how Edwards attacks an opponent.

The former Super Bowl champion also added that 3 years of brilliant college basketball had helped improve Michael Jordan‘s game before coming into the league. In comparison, Edwards played only 1 year of college basketball on a team which had a terrible losing record.

Therefore, instead of comparing the entirety of Michael Jordan’s career to the Timberwolves superstar, Keyshawn Johnson suggests that the comparison should be to how Jordan was in his initial years. The panel did agree that Edwards is using that killer instinct to go for shots only the legendary 6-time champion would do.

Anthony Edwards may not like it when the notion of the future face of the NBA is talked about. He prefers to concentrate on his game rather than get drawn into that topic. However, if 2 things happen, he will not be able to stop anyone from calling him the new face of the NBA.

One is if he dominates and along with his Minnesota Timberwolves teammates beat the defending champion Denver Nuggets in this playoff series. The second is if somewhere along the way, the other young superstars still in the playoffs such as Jalen Brunson, Tyrese Haliburton or Shai Gilgeous-Alexander falter. Then, the crown will be his.

With that, he will have finally taken the baton from the aging superstars who have bowed out of the playoffs. Even if he may not want it, the basketball world will consider him as the face of the NBA.
