Basketball 3×3 is a game that has gained popularity in recent years and is relatively new to the Olympic disciplines.

This format was first included in the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore 2010, and was also featured in the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing 2014 and Buenos Aires 2018.

Due to its success, the International Olympic Committee decided to include Basketball 3×3 in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and it will continue to be part of the Olympic program in Paris 2024.

Basketball 3×3 Format

In this format, two teams of three players each compete in a fast-paced and exciting game. Unlike traditional basketball, basketball 3×3 is played on a single half-court with one hoop and backboard. The game features a shorter time frame and specific rules that set it apart.

Each Basketball 3×3 game is played in a single 10-minute period or until a team reaches 21 points, whichever comes first. If the game time expires before the score limit is reached, the team with the most points wins. If the score is tied at the end of regulation, a 2-minute overtime is played, and the first team to score two points wins the game.

Basketball 3×3 Main Rules

Game Duration: Games consist of a single 10-minute period or until a team reaches 21 points. If the time runs out before the score limit is reached, the team with the most points wins.
Scoring: Field goals made inside the three-point arc are worth two points, while shots made from beyond the arc are worth three points. Free throws are worth one point.
Possession and Alternation: The team that scores or is fouled gets possession of the ball. After each basket, the ball must be taken outside the play area by the team that received it, allowing for organized defense. Teams must alternate ball possession at the start of each period or after certain fouls.
Fouls: Each team is allowed up to 6 fouls per game. The seventh and all subsequent fouls result in free throws for the opposing team. Personal fouls can also result in a loss of ball possession.
Game Restart: After a basket, the ball must be taken behind the three-point line to restart play. This rule prevents continuous play without pauses.
Player Substitutions: Each team can have up to four players, and substitutions can be made at any time during the game as long as the ball is out of play.
3×3 basketball combines the intensity of traditional basketball with a faster and more dynamic format, offering a vibrant and exciting spectacle for both players and spectators.
