It was a night of celebration in the Chicago Sky locker room, but Angel Reese did not know what was coming. Coach Teresa Weatherspoon overlooked Angel and honored her teammates for their hard work during their 85-77 win against the Atlanta Dream. When the drama unfolded, Reese left in tears.

Coach brings Angel Reese to tears

The Chicago Sky was a hot ticket in Atlanta, with everyone from little Black girls looking up to Reese to stars of the music world all packing into a sold out Gateway Center Arena to see Reese & Co take the court. This was clear in the locker room afterward, as the team was congratulated first by R&B singer Monica, who was born in Georgia, but told the team she was “cussing them out for you.”

Then, coach T-Spoon went through and gave praise to Dana Evans and Diamond DeShields, awarding them boxing gloves for showing the most “fight.” Reese, who recorded her WNBA record 11th consecutive double-double, did not get any recognition, but she was in tears shortly after.

As Weatherspoon went to break the huddle, she pulled the team back and prepared them for one last announcement while she had everyone’s attention. She grabbed Reese’s arm, and the Chi Town Barbie looked visibly anxious.

“We got an All-Star in the building!” she hollered, making Reese’s jaw promptly hit the floor. Her emotions ranged from disbelief to happiness to the shyness of not knowing what to say. All the while, her teammates hyped her up in a loving manner.

Reese and Clark to play in WNBA All-Star Game

Currently averaging 13.2 points per game and a league-leading 11.8 rebounds per game, Angel Reese was a deserving choice to make the WNBA All-Star roster as a rookie. The fan-voted team also includes fellow rookie and longtime on-court rival Caitlin Clark.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been her teammate before, even with USA Basketball or anything like that,” Clark said after her selection. “I know people are going to be really excited about it, but I hope it doesn’t take away from everybody else.”

“This is a huge accomplishment for everybody,” she continued. “I don’t want it to take away from any of that and just be the focal point of All-Star weekend because that’s not fair to them.”

But with the format of WNBA All-Stars versus Team USA, the team headed to the 2024 Paris Olympics in a few weeks, there’s no doubt to focus will be on Clark and Reese. As rookies, they are having an outsized impact on the league, as evident in their popularity in the All-Star voting. Now, they have a chance to team up and prove on the court why they deserved a spot on the Olympic roster.
