Captain Marvel franchise actor Brie Larson offers advice for new actors looking to star as superheroes in future films.

MCU Captain Marvel (played by Brie Larson) ready to fight on a poster for Captain Marvel (2019)

The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s resident Captain Marvel has words of advice for anyone looking to portray a superhuman on the big screen. The Marvels star Brie Larson suggests it takes a lot to be ready for the “very strange” world of superhero movies.

Speaking during The Hollywood Reporter’s drama actress roundtable, Larson delved into what it’s like to be a “superhero mentor” after portraying Captain Marvel for several years in the MCU. Larson says preparation for playing superheroes in movies requires a serious commitment to training and successfully managing bathroom logistics, admitting she’s one of the first people to reach out when actors are interested in such roles. “Always. I’m the first person to email everybody because it’s very specific and very strange,” Larson said. “People are like, ‘I don’t know how to do this.’ Yeah, no one does. Why would you? I’ll say, ‘Train, because you’ll want to be as prepared in your body as you possibly can because it only gets harder as the job goes on. And, really understand how to be able to go to the bathroom in your suit.’ The first Captain Marvel, it was a 45-minute thing to get me in and out of that costume.”

Larson has played Captain Marvel in multiple films, including 2019’s Captain Marvel, which proved to be a billion-dollar success at the box office, Avengers: Endgame and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. However, Larson nearly passed on the role, citing her desire to escape her past as a child actor and having apprehensions after playing various fictional female figures. She previously admitted how scared she was about joining the MCU when first approached with the possibility of playing Captain Marvel, but soon relented as she appreciated the opportunity to play a major female superhero and saw the potential transcendent success she’d achieve in the role.

Brie Larson Returned as Carol Danvers in The Marvels

While Larson enjoyed huge critical and commercial success with Captain Marvel, its follow-up was anything but, as The Marvels became the lowest-grossing MCU movie ever, receiving lukewarm reviews from critics and fans. The Marvels sees Larson, Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau) and Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel) investigating a wormhole linked to the Kree before realizing they keep swapping powers at every turn and try to find out why it’s happening.

Though Larson reportedly grew disillusioned with playing Captain Marvel due to negative social media comments from fans following the first film and was disappointed by The Marvels‘ performance, it appears she will carry on portraying Carol Danvers in the MCU. The Cosmic Circus recently reported there are multiple pathways MCU creatives are considering to have her continue in future MCU projects.

Meanwhile, there are no plans for a third Captain Marvel movie due to The Marvels‘ underwhelming showing. The Marvels was not helped by a slew of production issues, as the film was shot during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
