Amazon is officially moving forward with Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s live-action Tomb Raider series, which has been in development since January 2023.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Lara Croft

Amazon is officially moving forward with Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s live-action Tomb Raider series. The project, which has been in development since January 2023, has just been ordered to series by the streamer.

Per Deadline, Tomb Raider was unveiled during Amazon’s Upfront event in New York, with Head of Amazon & MGM Studios Jen Salke describing the upcoming project as an “epic” and “globe-trotting” series. At this time, Waller-Bridge, who is perhaps best known for creating and starring in the acclaimed series Fleabag, is only attached to Tomb Raider in a writing capacity. No cast for the series has been set.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge discusses how Prime Video’s upcoming Tomb Raider series will handle the sexualization tied to Lara Croft’s character.

“If I could tell my teenage self this was happening I think she’d explode,” said Waller-Bridge in a statement. “Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I feel incredibly privileged to be bringing it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as she does to many, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats ‘n all.”

Tomb Raider Will Kick Off a New Shared Universe

In addition to the live-action series, a new live-action Tomb Raider film and video game are also in development, with the plan being for all three projects to exist in the same universe. The Tomb Raider film and series will be developed by Amazon in association with Dmitri M. Johnson’s dj2 Entertainment, which holds the rights to the IP. Legendary, which also has a stake in the rights, is behind an anime Tomb Raider series at Netflix that is not expected to be part of the shared universe. Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) will voice Lara Croft in the Netflix series, which has been titled, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge wants to make sure the upcoming live-action Tomb Raider series she’s writing for Amazon does right by Lara Croft.

Amazon Greenlights Spider-Man Noir Series

Waller-Bridge’s Tomb Raider series wasn’t the only high-profile project to be announced during Amazon’s Upfront event. The company also confirmed that it was moving forward with Noir, a live-action series featuring the fan-favorite Marvel character Spider-Man Noir. Nicolas Cage, who previously voiced Spider-Man Noir in Sony Animation’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), has signed on to lead Noir, which has been in development since February 2023. Coincidentally, Harry Bradbeer, who directed multiple episodes of Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag, has been tapped to helm and executive produce Noir‘s first two episodes.

Per the official logline, “Noir tells the story of an aging and down on his luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.”

Tomb Raider is in development and does not yet have a premiere date.
