The recent roast of Tom Brady, which aired and is streaming on Netflix, brought together famous friends and former teammates for a night of fun and jokes. At least, that’s how it was billed. In truth, the roast at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles was loaded with awkward moments and unfortunate incidents that continued to draw intrigue after the event ended.

Tom Brady reveals his true feelings about his Netflix roast and how it affected his family

Brady himself had yet to address the controversial roast in totality, although he reportedly offered a private apology to ex-wife Gisele Bundchen after jokes were made at her expense, too. But the legendary NFL quarterback finally discussed the event and his role in it during an appearance on “The Pivot Podcast.”

Brady: The roast was a good lesson for me and I would not do it again

Brady may once have thought the April 28 roast would be a fun event, if not a little edgy. But the seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback was displeased that many of the comedians at the roast targeted Bundchen, and the football legend implied on “The Pivot Podcast” that these jokes had a negative impact on his family.

“I liked when the jokes were about me. I thought they were so fun,” Brady said. “I didn’t like the way they affected my kids.”

Brady went on to say that the roast was too mean-spirited and that he would not do it again in the future — even though some have suggested that Netflix paid the New England Patriots legend millions of dollars to appear on the program. To Brady, being a good parent following a two-decade NFL career matters more than another payday — and he admitted that he didn’t see “the full picture” when he signed on to do the roast.

“It makes you in some ways a better parent going through it,” Brady said. “Sometimes you’re naive. You don’t know.”

The theme of being there for his three children — two with Bundchen, another with Bridget Moynahan — was brought up time and time again during Brady’s podcast appearance. Even though the roast didn’t go quite according to the plan, the 46-year-old — set to debut on FOX‘s NFL broadcasts as a commentator this fall — believes he learned a lot from the experience.

I’m going to be a better parent as I go forward because of it,” Brady said. “At the same time, I’m happy everyone who was there had a lot of fun. If we’re not laughing about things, we’re crying. We should have more fun.”
