The Jacksonville Jaguars are more than happy with having Trevor Lawrence as their franchise, so they decided to reward him with a mega extension.

On Thursday, the team agreed to terms on a record-tying contract extension with the signal caller.

The quarterback agreed to a five-year, $275 million extension with the team, which includes a $200 million guarantee.

Fans took to the comment section to blast the Jacksonville Jaguars for overpaying Trevor Lawrence since he was billed to be the next generational quarterback and hasn’t produced anything close to it.

 

Last year was a rough year for Trevor Lawrence. He battled through a number of injuries that eventually led to him missing the first game of his career after 49 consecutive starts.

 

His numbers would suffer as he racked up 4,016 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions while completing 65.6 percent of his passes and taking 35 sacks, per ESPN.com.

Last season seemed to be a turning corner for the Jacksonville Jaguars. They started the year 8-3 and looked very much like a Super Bowl contender that could go head-to-head against the Kansas City Chiefs. This start to the season came on the heels of their 2022 playoff berth and improbable comeback win against the Los Angeles Chargers in the Wild Card Round.

Unfortunately, they went from contender to pretender as they had a four-game losing streak and finished 9-8 on the year. They would allow the Houston Texans to win the AFC South, and the Jags missed the playoffs following a Week 18 loss against the lowly Tennessee Titans.

Even if it does not make much sense logically, it appears more and more likely that Dak Prescott will leave the Dallas Cowboys after the 2024 NFL season.

Prescott’s four-year, $160 million contract is about to expire, and the organization has no intention of keeping him around beyond this one. The Cowboys would not stop paying Prescott even after they have paid him $55 million this year. Even if Prescott is moved or departs the team, the Cowboys will still have $40 million in dead money on their books. To pay a guy who might not play for you that much is relatively high.

This conversation has now led to the question of whether the Dallas Cowboys might opt to trade for another top quarterback.

K.D. Drummond of USA Today Cowboys is suggesting that the Dallas Cowboys should trade for quarterback Trevor Lawrence should Dak Prescott leave in free agency after the 2024 season.

According to Cowboys Wire writer K.D. Drummond, Lawrence could be seen as a short- or long-term solution at quarterback.

“The third-year starter couldn’t lead Jacksonville to double-digit wins and regressed from his top-10 MVP campaign of 2022. The Jaguars placed the fifth-year option on him, so he’d have to be put on the trade market in order for the Cowboys to acquire his services, but if the former No. 1 selection doesn’t turn the corner, he could be available for trade if Jacksonville goes another direction in the draft next year, or he could come free in 2026 if Dallas lands a bridge QB if Prescott leaves town.”

 

Prescott’s performance in pivotal games has become a focal point for the squad because of their repeated playoff losses. Despite being one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks, he has a 2-5 record and seven interceptions in seven games throughout the playoffs.

With the Jaguars, Trevor Lawrence, who is also up for a contract extension, has yet to exactly live up to the hype. He was clearly talented, as seen by back-to-back seasons with 4,000 yards or more, but he failed to make the predicted leap to the third year that the Jaguars had hoped for.

With one year left on his current contract—a four-year, $160 million agreement signed in 2021—Dak Prescott said early in March that he has “definite confidence” that he and the Cowboys can work out an extension.

After Jared Goff reset the market on Monday, don’t count on the Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott to come to a contract deal.

The Detroit Lions signed Goff to a four-year, $212M deal with $170M guaranteed, making him the second-highest-paid quarterback in the league.

The longer the Cowboys wait to sign Dak to an extension, the more expensive it becomes, and now the final nail has likely been put in that coffin of it ever happening.
