Bill Belichick is one of the most successful coaches in the NFL. Deion Sanders is testing his talents as a head coach with the Colorado Buffaloes. For many, there is no point of comparison between one and the other, even so, both could be on the shortlist for one of the most desired positions in the league, that of the helmsman of the Dallas Cowboys.
Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy is entering the final year of his five-year contract with the team. Although the last word has not yet been said, it is doubtful that the team’s management will offer him a contract extension.
It’s no secret that team owner Jerry Jones is not satisfied with the team’s performance under McCarthy. Although they have entered the postseason three consecutive years, they have lost twice in the wild-card round and once reached the divisional round.
The numbers don’t help McCarthy, and Jones isn’t known for his patience. The search for the new Cowboys head coach is about to begin, and Belichick could face unexpected competition from Coach Prime for the job.
Belichick vs. Sanders
Some analysts consider Belichick the go-to choice for the job. Following his departure from the New England Patriots at the end of the 2023 season, Belichick is out of a job, and his best prospect is a position as a television analyst. If the opportunity presented, he would surely accept an offer from Jones.
“He’s out of work, been tied to the Cowboys in the past and would be that typical high upside stop-gap type hiring to try and plug the roster and make a success out of it,” said Mike Poland on the podcast “Blogging the Boys.”
Despite Belichick’s credentials, a few specialists think Sanders has a chance to land the role. His popularity could compensate for his poor start with the Buffs in the NCAA, where he finished the 2023-2024 season with a 4-8 record.
Belichick also did not do well in his final year with the Pats. His relationship with the team and the board was so frayed that he finished the 2023 season with a 4-13 record. However, Sanders carries a weight that would prevent him from taking the position.
Sanders has no chance
In the latest episode of his Cowboys Report by Chat Sports podcast, analyst Tom Downey explained, “Belichick sure. I don’t want Deion Sanders, my head coach, all-time favorite football player. I don’t want to see as a head coach that is going to make this even more of a circus. So I’m passing on that stuff there.”
Scandals plagued Sanders’ first season in Colorado. Beyond the record, accusations of nepotism for allegedly favoring his sons Shedeur and Shilo Sanders, the mass exodus of players through the transfer portal, and the difficulties in attracting new talent to fill vacant positions have tarnished Coach Prime’s career.
The possibilities are open for both, but it is difficult for the Cowboys front office to ignore Sanders’ recent problems, especially if they have the possibility of bringing in a coach of Bill Belichick’s stature.
