Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders reportedly caused some of his players to quit because of a strange rule he implemented regarding rapper Lil Wayne.

In April, Lil Wayne performed a concert during the Buffaloes’ Spring Game weekend. The beloved rapper is a close friend of Deion Sanders, who’s entering his second season as the head football coach in Boulder.

According to a report from Athlon Sports, “Prime Time” made the Lil Wayne concert mandatory for his players. The outlet heard from several Colorado players that the Pro Football Hall of Famer even “threatened to dismiss anyone who skipped out.”

Here’s what one source told Athlon Sports:

“The Wayne concert was the final straw for a few players who hit the transfer portal. When Coach Prime told us we all had to be there to support Shedeur as a rapper, they were not happy at all. To be honest, it was nothing but a huge distraction and Daddy Ball was being played.”

Deion Sanders’ son, Shedeur Sanders, performed his “Perfect Timing” single at the concert with Lil Wayne. Close to three dozen players have left the Buffaloes’ program via the transfer portal this offseason.

After three years at Jackson State, Sanders signed a lucrative five-year deal with the Buffaloes worth $29.5 million. Prime Time earned the job after leading the Tigers to a pair of SWAC Championships, bringing over Shedeur and several other Jackson State stars to Boulder.

Colorado jumped out to a surprise 3-0 start last season, highlighted by a win over the TCU Horned Frogs in the season opener. However, the Buffaloes came back to earth as their schedule got tougher, and they dropped eight of their final nine games to finish 4-8.

Revamped Buffaloes Open 2024 vs. North Dakota State

One of the Buffaloes’ biggest problems last year was the offensive line, but Deion Sanders and company recruited several more linemen to ensure that Shedeur has better pass protection next year.

So there’s a little more hype around Colorado this time around. A healthy two-way star in Travis Hunter and inevitable improvement from Sheduer should make Colorado that much better here in 2024.

The Buffaloes will open their season with a home tilt against North Dakota State on Aug. 29, followed by a road contest against archrival Nebraska on Sept. 7.
