The NCAA star backed the Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark to make it in the WNBA
Paige Bueckers looks set to inherit the NCAA power vacuum left by Caitlin Clark, who graduated to the WNBA, and she’s come out in defense of the Indiana Fever‘s star as she watched her earn her first win of the season.
The UConn Huskies‘ prospect enjoyed a lot of basketball on Friday, May 24, and she showed off her interest in her chosen game by watching both the Minnesota Timberwolves take on the Dallas Mavericks and the Fever do battle with the Los Angeles Sparks, where she left Clark a subtle message.
Paige Bueckers knows how to make a celebration unforgettable
“Women’s basketball ALWAYS,” Bueckers said on X.com, formerly Twitter, as she watched the Fever trail the Sparks 39-33 with 1:27 left in the second quarter.
Clark has been under pressure for failing to reach her NCAA levels of regular 30-point games, although she’s only six matches into her WNBA career.
Furthermore, with the reputation that Clark has, she will be seen as the key to shutting down the Fever’s offense and also as someone to make an impression against.
It means that she’s experiencing a very tough time at the start of her life in professional women’s basketball, that has also seen LeBron James and Charles Barkley rush to her defense.
Why did Bueckers stay in the NCAA?
So, Bueckers, who stayed in the NCAA for an extra year, will likely go as the first pick next season and she will be watching to see how the WNBA responds to new graduates.
The Huskies’ ace decided to stay in college basketball for an extra year after an interrupted pair of seasons when she sustained a tibial plateau fracture in her knee, before returning at the back end of 2024.
That means that an extra season will allow the national player of the year in 2020/21 to continue to develop her talent, whilst also avoiding being drafted in a tough pool including stars such as Clark, Cameron Brink, Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese.

Jaden Rashada is reportedly suing Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier over unpaid NIL funds.
The quarterback, who transferred from Arizona to Georgia this offseason, shouldn’t expect a warm welcome whenever he goes to Florida, especially on the back of this latest development.
According to CBS Sports’ John Talty, Rashada has filed a lawsuit against Napier and Gators booster Hugh Hathcock for fraud.
The lawsuit also names school staff member Marcus Castro-Walker and claims that the player committed to Florida because he was promised a $13 million NIL payment that the defendants named in the lawsuit never intended to pay.
It notes that Napier and others “orchestrated and executed a fraud upon Jaden and were substantially and knowingly assisted by one another in carrying out the fraud.”
“Each of their individual schemes would not have succeeded without assistance from one another,” it adds.
