The Golden State Warriors destroyed their opponents and gave the impression that they were untouchable when they had Steph Curry and Kevin Durant. Nevertheless, despite their triumph, one of the championship team members disclosed that the two players had an internal competition to win the title of Finals MVP.

A part of the Warriors’ championship squad in 2017–18, Nick Young stated on an episode of Gil’s Arena that Steph Curry and Durant were vying for the title of Finals MVP.

Young said (14:10): “I remember, they was neck and neck, KD and Steph. Then Steph had one bad game; KD was hitting. At the locker room, Steph’s head was down, damn near tears after a win. Man, he wanted to win that b***h.”

In the 2018 NBA Finals, Durant averaged 28.8 points, 10.8 rebounds, and 7.5 assists against the Cleveland Cavaliers, led by LeBron James. Curry averaged 27.5 points, 6.8 assists, and 6.0 rebounds throughout the series.

Steph Curry did not fare well in Game 3, managing only 11 points on 3-of-16 field goal shooting and 1-of-10 from beyond the arc. This was Durant’s second Finals MVP honor while playing for Golden State.

Kevin Durant Thinks Steph Curry Is the Best Point Guard of All Time

Following the Phoenix Suns’ 113–112 defeat to the Golden State Warriors in February of this year, Kevin Durant lauded Steph Curry, his former colleague, as the most significant point guard ever.

Durant said, “He is the all-time greatest ever at his position. Top five ever.”

Despite not winning the MVP during the Warriors’ golden years—that honor went to Durant and Andre Iguodala—Curry did receive it for guiding the team to victory in 2022.

In the six-game 2022 NBA Finals, Steph Curry averaged 31.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists to help the Warriors overcome the Boston Celtics.
