Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball is being sued by the family of an 11-year-old boy, who accused the point guard of breaking his foot.
According to Tamaria McRae, her son Angell Joseph was run over by the former Chino Hills standout after approaching him for an autograph at the team’s annual Purple and Teal Day last October.
“[Angell] was like, ‘LaMelo, I love you. I love you, sign my … give me your autograph. Can you sign it for me?’” she told Jason Stoogenke of WSOC-TV Action 9.
LaMelo didn’t sign the autograph but instead drove off.
McRae claims to have seen her son go down to the ground like he “dropped something,” but he was apparently doubling over in pain because Ball had run over and broken his right foot.
“I just seen my son kind of go down and I thought maybe he had dropped something,” she added.
“This is his hero, his idol, and he got run over by him,” Cameron DeBrun, the family’s lawyer, said.
The attorney explained that Joseph’s family would have filed an insurance claim to have Ball pay the kid’s medical expenses, but the police report from the incident did not include the player’s name and insurance information.
The Charlotte Hornets Are Being Sued Too
The Charlotte Hornets have also been named in the suit, with the family suggesting that the team should have put more safety measures in place to protect the fans near the players.
Meanwhile, LaMelo Ball played just 22 games for the team last season due to a right ankle injury that ended his campaign prematurely. He averaged 23.9 points and 8.0 assists per contest and shot 35.5 percent from three.

History was made on Tuesday when Bam Adebayo was selected to the NBA All-Defensive First Team. Adebayo became the first player from the Miami Heat to be selected five times to the All-Defensive Team. It was also his first selection to the All-Defensive First Team since the previous format of the league was replaced this season with a positionless league.
In response to his most recent achievement, Adebayo said in an interview with The Miami Herald that he should have been selected to the first team in prior seasons. This year, he was a finalist behind Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert.
“I feel like this is a long time coming. But just staying in this moment, enjoying it. I’m blessed to be one of the ones selected,” Adebayo said.
Throughout his career, Bam Adebayo has been selected to the All-Defensive Second Team four times, from 2020 to 2023. Adebayo has also consistently placed among the top five candidates for Defensive Player of the Year for the past five years. This season, he was a finalist for the first time.
